Massachusetts Equine Clinic is a full-service, multi-veterinarian equine ambulatory practice with haul-in capabilities, established in 1985 by Dr. Jay Merriam. Since then, the clinic has grown into a five-doctor team supported by a well-established internship program. We serve a wide variety of equine disciplines and pride ourselves on building long-term, trust-based relationships with our clients—ensuring they are fully informed at every step of diagnostics and treatment. We offer 24/7 emergency coverage, reliable farm-call services, and a broad spectrum of care ranging from general wellness to advanced diagnostics, sports medicine, field surgery, reproduction, and some hospital-based services. Our mission is to treat every horse as if it were our own, delivering compassionate, professional, and excellent veterinary care while mentoring the next generation of equine practitioners.

Position Overview 

We are seeking an Equine Associate Veterinarian with a minimum of one year of experience to join our team. This position is ideal for practitioners seeking a collaborative equine practice with a strong focus on work-life balance. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply to our 1-year internship program.

In this role, you will primarily provide ambulatory equine care, including general medicine, wellness, sports medicine/lameness, dentistry, diagnostics, and emergency services, with the opportunity to expand into reproduction. You will have full access to our fully equipped facility to support high-quality patient care. 


Key Responsibilities 

  • Provide ambulatory care (vaccinations, deworming, lameness exams, wound care, diagnostics, reproduction, etc.) within the clinic’s coverage radius. 
  • Perform diagnostics and advanced procedures, including: 
  • Digital radiography 
  • Portable ultrasound (tendon/ligament, soft tissue, abdominal/thoracic, reproduction)
  • Endoscopy / gastroscopy
  • Dentistry including power-floating and oral radiographs 
  • Shockwave therapy, regenerative medicine, and sports medicine treatments for performance horses. 
  • Opportunity to grow our reproductive services.
  • Maintain accurate medical records, communicate treatment plans clearly to owners/trainers, and ensure client education and involvement. 
  • Participate in 24/7 emergency on-call coverage as part of the team’s rotational emergency schedule with 100% of Emergency Fee going to associate. 

Ideal Candidate (Qualifications & Qualities) 

  • DVM / VMD (or equivalent) with 1+ years of experience. 
  • Strong interest in general practice, wellness, diagnostics, dentistry, sports medicine/lameness, and emergency medicine. 
  • Good communication skills — comfortable discussing diagnostic plans, treatment options, and outcomes with clients/trainers/farm owners. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team, share on-call and ambulatory responsibilities, and contribute to a supportive, professional environment. 
  • Commitment to high quality, compassionate equine medicine, and willingness to grow with the practice. 

Salary: $85,000-$115,000 base plus commission. Salary commensurate with experience.
Schedule: 4-day work week, with shared on-call (intern covers 50% of on-call).


Location: Uxbridge, MA (serving parts of Massachusetts and northern Rhode Island, with ambulatory coverage up to 1 hour from clinic) 
Start Date: March 1st, 2026
