Pet+ER  is interested in adding an Emergency Director to our Emergency and Critical Care team at our beautiful new hospital that opened in Hunt Valley, MD in June 2023. We provide 24-hour emergency and critical care services, partnering with in-house specialty teams in Surgery, Internal Medicine, Oncology, Cardiology, Neurology, ophthalmology, and Canine Rehabilitation —together providing the highest level of support possible to our patients and their owners. 


We have a state-of-the-art ICU with stat case receiving bays, a Canon ultrasound system, high flow oxygen support, critical patient monitoring in the multiple Snyder oxygen kennels, digital radiology, 6-Lead EKG, in-house lab capacity including, coagulation, and blood gas monitoring. Spacious dedicated ER operating room with Ligasure, GIA, and TA stapling devices. A modernized bright isolation ward, negatively pressurized to prevent air contamination to the hospital, a separate walk area, windows, runs, and wash tub. 16 slice CT, Hyperbaric oxygen chamber, MRI, and a blood bank coming in late 2025.



Position overview

The Emergency Director assists the Medical Director and Hospital Director with the organization and direction of clinical operations and administration, assuring high-quality medicine and outstanding client experience. This role is designed to maintain a 75% clinical and 25% administrative split, with a proposed schedule of 2 12-hour clinical days per week and 2 6-hour admin days per week. After a 6 months period to become well-established with the team, we are happy to support remote admin shifts!


The ideal candidate will have 5+ years’ veterinary practice experience (leadership preferred), combined with internship training or 2+ years' emergency experience in a specialty hospital setting. DVM (or equivalent) degree, Maryland state licensure, DEA and Controlled Substance Licensure are required for this role.


Clinical duties will include a mixture of triage, receiving, and inpatient care, and our emergency doctors enjoy a plentiful and interesting caseload. Our ER doctors routinely cut soft tissue cases that present to ER and we are happy to provide additional surgical training as needed. Clinical shifts will include a mixture of day, swing, overnight, weekend, and holiday coverage. ER surgical experience is required to be considered for this position.


As an Emergency Director, you will also:

  • Provide leadership and guidance to the emergency veterinary team 

  • Exemplify and instill in others the Ethos culture and core values at all times. 

  • Assist in ensuring that medicine is delivered in compliance with federal, state and local regulatory agency requirements. 

  • Advise on policies and procedures for “best practice” clinical operations and efficient use of staff.   

  • Assist the Medical Director and hospital management in addressing client and RDVM medical review needs.  Assist with the investigation, discussions and resolution of case reviews. 

  • Assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of procedures and processes that improve operations, workflow, medical quality, client service and charge capture in the hospital.  

  • Assist Medical Director in monitoring client needs/ concerns, reviewing medical cases and providing solutions that support both our team members and clients, to include phone, email, and in-person meetings as needed.

  • Provide clinical mentoring and coaching to veterinarians and technicians. 

  • Support DVM onboarding, relief scheduling, and recruitment

  • Provide coaching and feedback via 1:1 meetings with doctors and during shifts as needed

  • Ensure efficiency, monitoring caseload per shift

  • Review finances (production, labor costs, invoices, discounts, CE compliance, pricing structure)

  • Manage doctor and technician team relationship

  • Provide technical support for the blood bank

  • Assist Medical Director with doctor quarterly and annual reviews

  • Partner on intra-services relationships and needs

  • Review equipment needs

  • Attend Ethos company trainings and community team events as required

Our compensation model is ProSal, with a base salary range of $140,000 to $185,000 for experienced ER veterinarians, with earning potential of $230,000 to $350,000 when factoring in production. No negative accrual. Our mDVM role also includes an additional administrative stipend of $40,000 to $60,000 depending on leadership experience.
