Equine Veterinary Assistant

Massachusetts Equine Clinic

Job Description

Equine Veterinary Assistant

Job Summary

At Massachusetts Equine Clinic in Uxbridge, MA, our Equine Veterinary Assistants are the vital right hand to our veterinarians—keeping them organized, supported, and ready to provide exceptional care. We’re a busy, full-service equine practice offering ambulatory care, hospitalization, sports medicine, reproduction services, gastroscopy and endoscopy, pre-purchase exams, diagnostics, lameness evaluations, surgery, and emergency care.

This is a dynamic, hands-on role that blends top-notch horse handling skills with strong organizational know-how. As an Equine Veterinary Assistant, you’ll work side-by-side with our veterinarians both in the field and at the clinic—restraining and handling horses safely, preparing and administering medications, assisting with a variety of procedures, maintaining and preparing equipment, and keeping our mobile veterinary trucks stocked, clean, and ready to roll. You’ll also be responsible for driving the clinic’s work vehicle to farms, managing inventory and restocking, keeping detailed medical records, processing billing, having clear and empathetic client communication, and helping the veterinarian stay on track during busy appointment days.

Our ideal candidate is a skilled horse handler who thrives in a fast-paced environment, communicates clearly, and takes pride in anticipating the needs of the veterinarian and the team. You should be eager to learn, adaptable, and ready to pitch in wherever needed—whether it’s in the treatment area, on the road, or behind the scenes.

We offer a supportive, team-oriented workplace that values work-life balance and provides opportunities to grow your skills and knowledge in equine veterinary care. If you’re passionate about horses, love working outdoors as much as indoors, and want to play a key role in delivering exceptional patient care, we’d love to meet you.

Essential Job Functions

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide compassionate, attentive care to equine patients and their owners, fostering strong relationships and enhancing the clinic’s reputation in the community.

  • Maintain respectful, collaborative relationships with veterinarians and all team members to support a positive, efficient work environment.

  • Stay highly organized and able to multitask effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic setting.

  • Demonstrate reliability and dependability with excellent attendance and punctuality.

  • Exhibit a strong work ethic and consistently uphold high standards for yourself and the team.

Veterinary Skills

  • Prepare and maintain the ambulatory vehicle, manage appointment flow, gather thorough patient histories, and assist veterinarians during examinations and treatments.

  • Utilize knowledge of equine diseases, physical assessments, and patient monitoring to triage and prioritize care effectively.

  • Practice strict use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe animal handling, and skilled restraint—especially with agitated horses.

  • Administer medications, vaccinations, and fill prescriptions as directed by the veterinarian.

  • Assist with diagnostic procedures including radiographs, ultrasonography, endoscopy, and gastroscopy.

  • Perform laboratory tasks such as sample collection and coordinating send-out labs.

  • Follow rigorous cleaning protocols and contribute to daily clinic and facility upkeep to maintain a clean, organized environment.

  • Manage and maintain equipment with respect and care.

Communications

  • Support Client Service Representatives when needed to ensure seamless client interactions.

  • Educate clients on equine health, treatments, and preventative care tailored to their horses’ needs.

  • Accurately document all patient medical records and maintain up-to-date information.

  • Follow verbal and written instructions carefully, including emails, task lists, and clinic signage.

  • Collaborate and communicate clearly with team members to deliver optimal patient care and a positive client experience.
