Equine Veterinary Support Assistant

About the Position
South Shore Equine Clinic & Diagnostic Center is seeking a dedicated and versatile team member to join our practice in a unique hybrid role that combines the responsibilities of both a Veterinary Technician and a Client Service Representative. This position is ideal for someone with a solid foundation in horsemanship, strong communication skills, and a passion for both patient care and client service.

In this role, you will support our veterinarians in the field and hospital while also serving as a key point of contact for our clients. The position blends hands-on equine technical skills with administrative and client service responsibilities, providing a dynamic and rewarding career opportunity.

We are hiring for both full-time and part-time schedules. For candidates who are interested, there are additional opportunities to take on laboratory responsibilities, assist with inventory management, and participate in technical on-call coverage


Key Responsibilities

Technical & Patient Care

  • Assist veterinarians in the diagnosis and treatment of equine medical cases both in-clinic and ambulatory settings.
  • Provide care for hospitalized patients.
  • Assist with patient admission and discharge, ensuring smooth transitions, accurate documentation, and clear client communication.
  • Handle horses safely and confidently, including trailering.
  • Process laboratory samples and maintain accurate records.
  • Support facility and equipment maintenance as needed.

Client Service & Administration

  • Manage client communications via phone, email, and text in a professional and timely manner.
  • Schedule appointments and coordinate farm calls efficiently.
  • Provide excellent client service and education, supporting both patients and owners.
  • Use practice management software to document interactions and medical records.
  • Handle accounts receivable, including sending invoices/statements, processing payments, and discussing balances with clients.
  • Prepare client estimates as directed by veterinarians.
  • Organize, scan, and maintain client documentation.
  • Assist with general office organization and cleanliness.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Strong horse handling skills with 5+ years of barn experience.
  • Background in equine medical knowledge and terminology.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Reliable, adaptable, and able to stay composed in stressful situations.
  • Team player who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Proficiency with computers, tablets, cloud-based systems, and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Valid MA driver’s license and dependable transportation.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Motivated, dependable, and passionate about both equine care and client service.

Schedule

  • Full-time or part-time opportunities available.
  • Flexibility required for weekday and weekend shifts during the morning, afternoon, and early evening hours.
