A veterinary Kennel Assistant provides essential support in to the clinic by caring for pets that are being boarded, treated, or recovering from medical procedures. Their role is vital in ensuring the comfort, safety, and well-being of animals while they are under the care of the veterinary staff. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about animal care and interested in working in a dynamic veterinary environment.

Primary Responsibilities

Animal Care and Supervision:

·         Monitor and care for animals in the clinic’s care. This can include feeding, walking, and ensuring they have adequate exercise and mental stimulation.

·         Administer basic medications or treatments as directed by veterinary staff.

·         Ensure animals are kept clean and comfortable, providing bedding and cleaning kennels as necessary.

·         Observe animals for signs of illness, injury, or distress and report concerns to the veterinarian or veterinary technicians.

Cleaning and Sanitation:  

·         Maintain cleanliness of the kennel and surrounding areas by cleaning cages, pens, and common areas to prevent the spread of disease and ensure a hygienic environment.

·         Disinfect and sanitize equipment, tools, and surfaces to ensure proper sanitation and infection control.

Customer Service:  

·         Communicate with pet owners regarding their animal's condition, feeding schedules, medications, or any concerns they may have.

·         Provide general information to clients about kennel services, policies, and animal care.

Assisting Veterinary Staff:  

·         Assist veterinarians and staff with procedures when necessary, including restraining animals or providing support during examinations.

·         Help with the transportation of animals to and from the treatment areas as required.

Record Keeping:

·         Document animals’ health, feeding schedules, medications, and any observations in the kennel log or database as directed.

·         Ensure accurate and timely records are maintained for each animal's stay.

Qualifications and Skills

·         A high school diploma or equivalent.

·         Previous experience in animal care or a veterinary clinic is preferred.

·         Compassionate and patient with animals.

·         Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

·         Ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team.

·         Physical stamina to handle heavy lifting and long hours in an active environment.

·         Basic knowledge of animal behavior, health signs, and pet care.

Working Conditions

·         Hours can vary depending on the clinic's schedule, including weekends, and holidays. Part time is 0-29 hours and full time is considered anything over 30 hours.

·         Environment:  May include working in a fast-paced environment with animals of various temperaments and health conditions.

The base hourly range for this position is $18 - $22. Our pay ranges are primarily determined by role, level, and location. The range provided for each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for the position. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
