We are currently looking for a kennel assistant to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a love for working with animals and a strong work ethic. We are a full-service, small animal hospital dedicated to providing innovative, compassionate care to the city of Madison and surrounding areas. Your daily functions include, but are not limited to, providing the basic needs of animals being groomed, boarded, or patients with medical appointments, including cleaning of cages, runs, and ward areas in the hospital. This position involves basic husbandry, bathing, and grooming, while carefully monitoring the well-being of our patients and boarding residents in the facility. Previous experience in animal care is preferred but not required. Primary Responsibilities 

  • Perform daily sanitation of the boarding facilities and cattery ward according to Animal Health Center of Madison policy and procedures.  

  • Observe animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, or disease and report any concerns to veterinary staff as needed.  

  • Assure all animals are cared for regarding food, water, daily exercise, and appropriate living conditions. 

  • Basic animal husbandry includes feeding, watering, bathing, brushing, teeth brushing, clipping nails, and cleaning ears.  

  • Efficiently retrain animals for examination and various treatments.  

  • Maintain and project a positive attitude daily.  

  • Maintain cleanliness and safety standards within the kennel environment.  

  • Address customer inquiries and provide exceptional service to pet owners.  

  • Frequently lift and carry patients weighing 50 lbs., and walk/handle patients weighing up to 150 lbs. 

  • Perform laundry of hospital towels, blankets, and bedding.  

  • Record information such as feeding schedules, appearance, and behavior of animals that are boarded, groomed, or hospitalized.  

  • Maintain boarding inventory through stocking and cleaning.  

  • Ability to work independently on tasks/duties assigned by your immediate supervisor.  

  

Qualifications: 

  • Kennel or pet resort experience and strong animal handling skills  

  • Proficient in animal restraint and pet care techniques 

  • Ability to lift and carry dogs weighing up to 50 lbs., and walk/handle patients weighing up to 150 lbs.  

  • Knowledge of dog training and veterinary practices is a plus  

  • Comfortable speaking to clients with experience in customer service 

  • Veterinary technician or assistant experience is highly desirable
