Job Description
Metairie Small Animal Hospital is seeking a Laboratory Veterinary Technician to join our dedicated medical team. This role is ideal for a detail‑oriented veterinary professional who enjoys diagnostics, laboratory work, and supporting high‑quality patient care through accurate and timely results.
The Laboratory Veterinary Technician is responsible for performing in‑house diagnostic testing, maintaining laboratory equipment, and ensuring quality control standards are met. This role works closely with veterinarians and technical staff to support patient diagnosis, treatment planning, and medical decision‑making.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the daily operations of the laboratory department
- Perform and submit diagnostic tests to both in‑house analyzers and external laboratories:
- CBCs and blood chemistry panels
- Urinalysis and sediment evaluation
- Fecal testing
- Cytology preparation and staining
- Consistently evaluating and improving laboratory protocols in alignment with growth and evolving needs.
- Ensure information is cascaded appropriately to all departments.
- Act as a liaison with external laboratories to optimize test ordering, turnaround time, and efficiency.
- Maintain and organize external laboratory reference binder
- Monitor and report abnormal or critical values to veterinarians and the appropriate manager promptly.
- Conduct diagnostic tests using both automated instrumentation and manual techniques.
- Perform blood chemistry testing to evaluate various analytes in blood and body fluids.
- Accurately enter and document laboratory results in medical records.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, perform quality control procedures, and document results.
- Ensure laboratory cleanliness, organization, and compliance with safety and biohazard protocols.
- Assist with training team members on proper sample handling and submission procedures as needed.
- Support overall hospital workflow during high‑volume periods.
