Small Animal Rotating Internship

Nashville Veterinary Specialists

Job Description

Nashville Veterinary Specialists (NVS) is offering one rotating internship position to an adaptable, hard-working, and highly motivated veterinary graduate, to fill our final spot in our intern class. Nashville Veterinary Specialists is a veterinary specialty hospital and 24/7 animal emergency clinic. Our primary focus is to honor the human-animal bond in all we do, focusing on patient care, client experience, and the health of our team. We believe we can never stop improving and strive to improve in all we do.

NVS is located in a recently expanded 24,000 square foot hospital with digital radiography, fluoroscopy, computed tomography (CT), on-site MRI, ultrasound, endoscopy, access to an on-site commercial laboratory, and more. Our full time staff includes board certified specialists in emergency/critical care (2), anesthesia (1), internal medicine (4), neurology (2), oncology (2)/Radiation Oncology (1), cardiology (2) and surgery (3), as well as eleven internship-trained emergency doctors. NVS is an actively growing practice and additional specialists may be added prior to the commencement of the internship. We are currently actively looking to add an additional surgeon and oncologist.

Interns will rotate through each of the specialty services and assist in the management of cases under the direct supervision of our specialists. Interns will have primary case responsibility on ER; however, there is always an emergency doctor present for direct support. The intern will never be left alone during a shift. It is important to us that the interns always have support if needed. Currently interns do not have on-call responsibilities on a regular scheduled basis but may provide on-call for the surgery department in special circumstances. Interns will never be on call for more than 5 days in a row. Interns will also be expected to participate in daily hospital rounds, weekly teaching rounds and journal club.

Nashville Veterinary Specialists is conveniently located near the Nashville Zoo and Veterinary Ophthalmology Services (VOS) where external rotations can be done if interested in those specialties. NVS also has a satellite clinic in nearby Clarksville, TN that has surgery, internal medicine and emergency services.

Benefits include group plan health insurance, allowances for uniforms (scrubs and lab coats), and reimbursement for liability insurance and Tennessee state licensure. One week of vacation is included, as well as one week of sick or professional time that can be used for interview days for those pursuing additional internships or residencies.

What sets NVS apart from any other veterinary specialty practice? Not only do we focus on patient care, but core to our hospital culture is also a focus on the health of our team, our community and the environment.

The Health of our Team:

The rotating internship at NVS is difficult and the interns will be expected to work hard, however, we recognize the importance of quality of life and the work/life balance. To foster this, we arrange monthly social gatherings for our interns outside of work. Our practice is also excited to be bringing on a veterinary social worker who will not only be available for clients, but also for our employees. NVS enjoys other events and incentives to help morale including an annual Wellness Week in January featuring chair massages, prize drawings and various health and wellness lectures. We also have cupcakes once a month to celebrate employees’ birthdays and other treats like various food trucks.

Our Community:

Giving back to our community is also important to us. NVS participates in various (optional) volunteer activities throughout the year. Some examples of organizations we volunteer with include the Second Harvest Food Bank, Cumberland River Compact and Room in the Inn.

The Environment:

In addition to creating a cohesive and healthy work environment, NVS is committed to sustainable environmental practices. NVS has a comprehensive recycling and composting program as well as a 5,000-gallon rainwater collection system, roof mounted photovoltaic solar panel system, skylights, and an energy recover system for heating and air.

Finally, Nashville is located in middle Tennessee and is home to approximately 680,000 people. Although Music City is most well known for its strong connection with country music, Nashville is the headquarters of some of the largest record labels and recording studios, creating an endless supply of many different genres of music. Additionally, there are over 10,000 acres of easily accessible public land for outdoor activities and there is a vibrant restaurant scene. Nashville also boasts the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, an internationally renowned medical and research facility.

Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact us. We are still open to in-person hospital visits and interviews; however, we are also open to online meetings based on the comfort level of the applicant. During the application process, an interview via telephone is strongly recommended.
