Veterinarian - Medical Director

East Ventura Animal Hospital

Job Description

Medical Director – East Ventura Animal Hospital | Ventura, CA

Are you a passionate, experienced veterinarian ready to step into a leadership role at a thriving, community-rooted practice? East Ventura Animal Hospital has been a cornerstone of compassionate pet care in Ventura, CA since 1981 — and we're looking for a Medical Director who shares our belief that every client deserves to feel like family, and every patient deserves our very best.

A Practice Worth Leading

You'll be joining a close-knit, four-doctor team in a completely renovated, modern facility equipped with everything you need to practice exceptional medicine — from in-house IDEXX diagnostics and digital dental X-ray to a dedicated surgery suite and new Core Imaging Ultrasound. We're paper-light, forward-thinking, and genuinely invested in doing great work together. Team paint nights and escape rooms aren't just perks — they're a reflection of who we are.

The Role:

As Medical Director, you'll be the clinical heartbeat of our hospital. In partnership with an experienced Hospital Manager, you'll shape the medical culture, mentor doctors and staff, drive financial performance, and champion the kind of collaborative environment where great medicine happens naturally.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing surgical and medical cases across the doctor team, ensuring outstanding outcomes and clear client communication
  • Establishing and upholding medical protocols and standards of care
  • Recruiting, developing, and supporting associate veterinarians and technical staff
  • Managing medical inventory, controlling costs, and driving sustainable hospital growth
  • Partnering with the Hospital Manager on budgeting, operations, and strategic planning
  • Fostering community involvement and championing innovation within the practice

What We Offer:

  • Competitive salary: $150,000–$170,000
  • Quarterly and annual performance bonuses
  • Full benefits package including 401(k) with employer match
  • 4.5-day work week — Saturday afternoons and Sundays always off
  • 2:1 tech-to-doctor ratio for exceptional support
  • Easy access to specialists and nearby emergency facilities

Life in Ventura County

Ventura is one of California's best-kept secrets. You're minutes from stunning Pacific coastline, hiking trails with hidden waterfalls, and a vibrant local food and arts scene — and less than two hours from Los Angeles. San Diego, Las Vegas, the Sierra Nevada, and San Francisco are all within a day's drive. If you want California living without the big-city pace, Ventura delivers.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be a graduate of an AVMA-accredited veterinary college, or have successfully completed the ECFVG or PAVE certification programs.
