Job Description

The Veterinary Assistant is the entire hospital team's primary support. Every department relies on their significant role in aiding with a variety of services to provide excellent client and patient care.

 


Job Description Overview: Here at Middlesex County Animal Hospital, this is an entry level technical position to work directly with the veterinary team and patients. You must be able to work in a fast paced environment, and possess a positive attitude. As a veterinary assistant, you maintain the hospital as a whole. You attend to appointments, labratory processing, husbandry, and housekeeping duties. You work alongside other veterinary assistants and veterinary professionals to perform technician appointments, assist client care, and assist Doctors, Lead team members and VA nurses as needed during appointments and surgical procedures.Job Responsibilities: Experience depending, you will be performing or assisting in these areas. Including, but not limiting to:

 

Technician appointments
  • Animal restraint (mainly dogs and cats)
  • Documenting patient medical charts
  • Venipuncture
  • Grooming (Nail trims, sanitary clips, anal gland expressions, etc)
  • Vaccine administration
  • Obtaining blood pressures
  • Bandage changes
Doctor Appointments/Surgical procedures (additional repsonsibilies than tech apts)
  • Animal restraint (i.e. Radiographs, Ultrasound, Surgical positioning, etc)
  • Documenting patient medical charts
  • Drawing up and administering medications
Client Care assistance
  • Answering phones
  • Booking appointments
  • Processing payments
  • Checking clients in (for appointments and hospitalizations). 
 
Qualifications:
  • Mist be 18 years or older
  • Must be a self-starter, able to multitask and a team player
  • Genuinely enjoys working with animals and is able to deal with them even when they are stressed, ill or in pain
  • Prefer 1+ years of experience, but not required
  •  Ability to meet the physical demands of the job. Work requires lifting, carrying and restraining animals (will be assisted by other staff members in lifting animals over 40 lbs.). Should be able to lift 40lbs on own.
  • Walks or stands for extended periods or time; frequently works in a bent or squatting position
  • Is experienced in the teamwork approach and works well with all levels of hospital team members.
