Part-Time Temporary Horse Handler & Hospital Stable Assistant
Location: South Shore Equine Clinic – Plympton, MA
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 2:00 PM – 5:30 PM (Potential for additional weekend hours periodically)
South Shore Equine Clinic is seeking a mature and responsible Horse Handler & Hospital Stable Assistant to join our team in a part-time, temporary capacity. This role has the potential to transition into a permanent position for the right candidate.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of ten years of professional horse handling experience
- Strong, solid professional equine references required
- Must be comfortable handling horses of all temperaments, including young or difficult horses and foals
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced veterinary hospital setting
- Reliable, punctual, and able to follow detailed instructions from veterinarians and staff
- Capable of performing physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions
Duties & Responsibilities (as needed, not daily):
Daily Horse Care & Handling:
- Feeding horses according to individualized dietary needs (grain, hay, supplements)
- Ensuring fresh, clean water is always available
- Turning horses out to paddocks and bringing them back into stalls
- Grooming (brushing, picking hooves, checking for injuries)
- Handling and leading horses safely, including those requiring special care
Stable & Facility Maintenance:
- Mucking out stalls and replacing bedding
- Daily paddock cleaning
- Dragging and maintaining arena footing
- Sweeping aisles, cleaning feed buckets, and maintaining a clean barn environment
- Repairing fences, stalls, and gates as needed
Health & Veterinary Assistance:
- Monitoring horses for signs of illness, lameness, or injury
- Administering medications or treatments as directed by veterinarians
- Assisting with veterinary procedures when necessary
Additional Farm Duties:
- Lunging or hand-walking horses as needed
- Operating farm equipment such as tractors for feeding or manure removal
- Engaging professionally with clients, staff, veterinary students, and visitors
