Barn Maintenance Job Description

 

Job Details:

·         Full-Time or Part-Time

·         Work weekdays, weekends, and holidays

·         Ability to work around animals, hay, and dust

·         Ability to lift and push heavy loads over 100 pounds

 

Responsibilities Include:

            Daily

·         Outside maintenance including mowing, weed eating, touching up paint, fixing fences, etc..

·         Feeding and watering all animals, refill water throughout the day, make sure troughs and buckets are clean

·         Muck out manure and wet bedding from stalls and pens, add fresh bedding if needed. Clean stall walls and fronts if needed.

·         Sweep barn aisles, feed room, walkways and any other areas around barn to remove any hay, manure, and debris

·         Move horses to and from turn-out areas as scheduled, checking for any issues when leaving or entering the barn

·         Empty garbage and dispose of manure in designated areas

·         Straighten up equipment, supplies, and tools and keep up with equipment maintenance

 

 Weekly

·         Deep clean water buckets, feed pans, and other equipment

·         Disinfect shared equipment like cross-ties, pitchforks, and hoses

·         Conduct visual inspections for potential safety hazards such as loose boards, sharp edges, or protruding nails in and around stalls

·         Check hay, grain, supplements and bedding supplies and report what needs to be restocked

 

Monthly

·         Strip stalls of all bedding, power wash and disinfect walls and floors to control ammonia and bacteria

·         Inspect the barn’s structural integrity, including support beams, doors, gates, and roof for signs of damage and wear

·         Inspect and repair fences and check pastures for hazards like poisonous plants, holes, and debris

·         Check for signs of rodents and insects, service pest control stations

·         Test all electrical outlets and check for signs of frayed or chewed wires

·         Clean and inspect barn fans and other ventilation systems to ensure proper airflow and prevent dust build-up

 

Seasonal

·         Winter: Prepare for cold weather by insulating pipes, testing heaters and heated waterers, ensure walkways are clear of ice

·         Summer: Clean and service fans to improve circulation, increase pest control measures, and ensure horses have access to shade

·         Spring: Declutter and reorganize storage areas, deep clean the entire facility, clear away debris that has collected over the winter

·         Fall: Prepare for wet weather by checking drainage systems around the barn and prepare for muddy conditions
