Job Description
We are a very busy Mixed Animal Practice on the North Fork of Long Island. A rural area with farms, and wineries that is surrounded by water for all types of water sports. We have been in practice since 1994 and have a very family-oriented staff. We have 6 doctors that are great at mentoring including our large animal veterinarian who loves teaching. We presently mentor LIU veterinary students during years 2-4. We have a full staff of 7 licensed veterinary technicians and a large support staff. We work with many animal shelters and have a board-certified surgeon and internist come in when our clients need their skill set. You would never regret spending time with our team and experiencing the number of different cases we see.
Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Most externship experiences at Mattituck-Laurel Veterinary Hospital range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
