Veterinary Extern - General Practice

Buffalo Small Animal Hospital

Job Description

The team at Buffalo Small Animal Hospital is a strong, female-led team that runs on fostering a positive workplace and a true team atmosphere. Our clinic has been in existence since 1900, first serving the city's equines at the turn of the century. We have since evolved into a premier small animal clinic that services a varied population of urban clients and pets.

Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Buffalo is the second-largest city in the state of New York, situated on the beautiful eastern shore of Lake Erie. Our clinic is located downtown in the Allentown historic district. Nestled between the medical campus, the Elmwood Village, and the East Side of Buffalo, we cater to young professionals, families, and the artsy crowd. In addition to many cultural attractions, Buffalo has a lot to offer to families with its abundance of entertainment venues, recreation sites, and outdoor activities. We do get snow, but when you embrace winter, magic happens! Not to mention, a wonder of the world is in our backyard- Niagara Falls is a quick drive north of the city.

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. Externships at Buffalo Small Animal Hospital are offered to 4th year veterinary students.

Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view list of stipend amounts and HERE for details on the stipend program. The stipend amount for Buffalo Small Animal Hospital is $500.
