Veterinary Student Externship – Shady Brook Animal Hospital

At Shady Brook Animal Hospital, our externship program is designed to give veterinary students a well-rounded clinical experience in a welcoming, high-quality practice environment.

As part of the National Veterinary Associates (NVA) network, we are committed to fostering a positive learning experience rooted in mentorship, teamwork, and excellent patient care. You’ll gain invaluable insight into the daily operations of a successful veterinary hospital, all while sharpening your clinical and communication skills.

What You’ll Experience:

  • One-on-one mentorship from seasoned Associate Veterinarians

  • Hands-on experience performing physical exams and gathering patient histories

  • Diagnostic workups, treatment plan creation, and case discussions

  • Exposure to dentistry services and the opportunity to assist in surgical procedures

  • Client communication training and team collaboration opportunities

Program Highlights:
📅 Duration: minimum 2 weeks, up to 4 weeks (flexible based on student and hospital schedules)
🎓 Eligibility: veterinary students
💸 Stipend: Up to $2,000 for students in their clinical years to assist with travel/living expenses
