Veterinary Internal Medicine Specialist

South Asheville Veterinary Emergency & Specialty (SAVES)

Job Description

South Asheville Veterinary Emergency & Specialty (SAVES) is growing, and we are excited to share opportunities for Internal Medicine residents who are ready to shape their careers in a supportive, resource-rich environment.

At SAVES, our Internal Medicine service is uniquely positioned for success:

• Three human-trained ultrasound technologists available Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–8 p.m.

• Advanced imaging on-site, including a GE 1.5T MRI, 64-slice GE CT scanner, x-ray and fluoroscopy.

• In-house blood bank, ensuring rapid access to life-saving transfusion support.

• Advanced therapies, including:

o Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) for renal support

o Ventilator support for respiratory failure cases

o Laser lithotripsy for minimally invasive urinary stone management

o High-flow nasal oxygen therapy for advanced respiratory stabilization

o Thromboelastography (TEG) for coagulation testing and transfusion guidance

o Nutritional support (feeding tubes, parenteral nutrition) for critical and chronic cases

o A fluoroscopy-equipped kennel designed to support high-quality swallowing studies, enabling comprehensive evaluation of dysphagia and aerodigestive disorders in brachycephalic patients

• Highly skilled nursing support with RVTs and specialty coordinators for each department.

• Call responsibilities are shared between the Critical Care and Internal Medicine teams, with each doctor scheduled approximately every fifth weekend. In the event you are called in, you will receive a $500 call-in fee in addition to 25% production on the case. Call-ins are uncommon, as our ER team has its own scope and manages the majority of foreign body cases.

• Strong specialty collaboration, with:

o Two Surgeons (with the goal to have a 4-surgeon team by September 2026)

o Two Oncologists (joining August 2026)

o One Neurologist

o Two Criticalists

o One Double-Boarded Internist/Criticalist (with the goal to have a 3-internist team by August 2027)

o A second Internist, currently serving in the Army, who maintains a caseload with us every six weeks and will join full time in August 2027

o A team of 10 Emergency DVMs supporting 24/7 patient care and continuity

These resources ensure robust cross-referrals, advanced diagnostics, and exposure to complex cases that support your growth as a clinician.

At SAVES, we emphasize teamwork, innovation, and professional development. You will also benefit from mentorship, CE allowance, and a strong quality-of-life balance in Asheville’s vibrant mountain community.
