Job Title: Neurology Veterinary Technician  

Department: Clinical  

Reports to: Specialty services supervisor, Clinical Operations Manager  

General Purpose: 

The Neurology Veterinary Technician at Alpharetta Veterinary Specialty & Emergency (AVSE) is responsible for providing dedicated, high-quality veterinary care and exceptional service to neurology patients and their owners. The role includes supporting the Neurology department by assisting with examinations, administering medications, performing diagnostic tests, preparing for and assisting with surgical procedures, and maintaining patient medical records. The technician is expected to adhere to all AVSE protocols and state regulations, ensuring that all neurology services are provided effectively and efficiently.

 

Essential Job Functions:

- Assist the Neurology DVM in examinations, diagnostic procedures, and patient care, ensuring all necessary tools and supplies are readily available.

- Perform and assist in advanced neurology diagnostics including, but not limited to, MRI, CT scans, myelograms, spinal taps, and electromyography.

- Prepare and maintain the neurology suite, including cleaning and sterilizing instruments and equipment.

- Administer medications, including controlled substances, following proper documentation and logging procedures.

- Provide nursing care for neurology patients, including IV catheter placement, phlebotomy, drug administration, patient monitoring, and other necessary medical care.

- Monitor patients under anesthesia and assist in surgical procedures such as neurosurgeries and other related treatments.

- Maintain accurate and detailed medical records, including patient progress, reactions to treatment, and other critical notes.

- Educate clients on post-operative care, medication administration, and ongoing care for neurology patients.

- Support with discharge instructions, client education, and follow-up care.

- Collaborate with other departments to ensure a seamless flow of patient care and communication.

Qualifications:

- 2+ years of experience as a Veterinary Technician, preferably in a specialty or neurology setting.

- Credentialed as a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), or Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT).

- Proficient in advanced diagnostics, patient monitoring, and anesthesia techniques.

- Strong ability to handle and restrain animals safely, with knowledge of animal behavior.

- Excellent communication and client service skills; comfortable educating pet owners and working with a team.

- Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs. and work with or around potentially hazardous materials.

- Flexibility to work varied hours, including some weekends and holidays.

 

Work Environment: 

The Neurology Veterinary Technician will work primarily in the neurology suite, operating rooms, and patient care areas, but will also be expected to assist in other clinical areas as needed. Must be able to handle the physical demands of assisting with large animals, standing for long periods, and performing tasks in a fast-paced and occasionally stressful environment.
