Job Description
Position Summary
The Veterinary Technician plays a critical role in supporting veterinarians and ensuring high-quality patient care. This position involves assisting with medical procedures, patient monitoring, client communication, and maintaining a clean, efficient hospital environment. Veterinary Technicians serve as a key link between the doctor, patient, and client.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Nursing
- Safely restrain animals for exams and procedures
- Obtain and record patient histories, vitals, and weights
- Monitor hospitalized patients and report changes promptly
- Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as directed
- Provide compassionate care to all patients
Surgical & Dental Support
- Prepare patients for surgery (IV catheter placement, pre-medication, etc.)
- Monitor anesthesia and patient vitals during procedures
- Assist veterinarians in surgery and dental procedures
- Perform dental cleanings and take dental radiographs (if applicable)
Diagnostics & Laboratory
- Collect blood, urine, fecal, and other samples
- Run in-house lab work and prepare samples for outside labs
- Take and process radiographs
Client Communication & Education
- Clearly explain treatment plans, medications, and discharge instructions
- Educate clients on preventative care, nutrition, and follow-up needs
- Answer client questions with professionalism and empathy
Hospital Operations
- Maintain a clean, organized treatment area and exam rooms
- Properly handle and maintain medical equipment
- Ensure accurate and thorough medical recordkeeping
- Assist with inventory and stocking as needed
Qualifications
- Previous experience in a veterinary setting required
- Strong knowledge of animal handling, restraint, and basic nursing care
- Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and restrain animals of various sizes
- Comfort standing for long periods and performing physically demanding tasks
- Ability to handle exposure to animals, chemicals, and medical equipment
