JOB DESCRIPTION

 

 

Job Title:  Technician Manager                                                                     Job Status:  Full-time

Schedule:  40 hrs/week                                                                      Supervisor:  Hospital Director

 

Job Purpose:  The purpose of the Technician Supervisor position is to provide direct oversight of the clinical aspects of the veterinary hospital including personnel, equipment, and the facility. This position works in close allegiance with the Medical Director and Hospital Director and is consider a leader within the team culture.

 

Duties & Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

 

Leadership:

  • Serve as a coach, trainer, and mentor to hospital staff in a positive, meaningful, and professional manner.
  • Supports programs and decisions from the corporate level through the local level.
  • Handles personnel matters in a professional and confidential manner to promote team building and trust.
  • Works closely with team leaders, lead technicians and hospital management to support decisions, protocols, and standards of care.
  • Assists with daily flow of all clinical areas including personnel staffing and management, flow of patient care, procedures, and treatments; provides direct assistance to areas as necessary.
  • Partners with DVMs and lead technicians to deliver consistent and outstanding patient and client care.
  • Promotes proper handling, restraint, and treatment of patients in a mutually safe and beneficial manner.

 

Personnel Management: 

  • Directly oversees staffing needs in the hospital
  • Participates in recruitment, interviewing and selection of non-DVM applicants for open positions.
  • Oversees the management of staff scheduling while working closely with technician Supervisor, team leaders and DVMs with a goal of providing adequate staff coverage on a 24/7 basis.
  • Participates in staff development, training, retooling and disciplinary actions as necessary.
  • Participates in staff evaluations both 90-day and annual.

 

Equipment & Facility Maintenance:  Defined as all aspects of the physical plant, indoors and outdoors, and all facility equipment.

  • Oversees that the facility is maintained in sound work order.  Facility is clean, odor-free, in good repair and appealing to the public and staff.
  • Medical equipment is maintained in sound working order and repaired or replaced as necessary. 
  • Assists with other needs as requested.

 

Technical Duties:

  • Assist veterinarians in the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery
  • Proficient IV catheter placement
  • Proficient and accurate drug calculations and administration
  • Quality nursing and husbandry care of patients
  • Strong working knowledge of veterinary procedures and pharmacology
  • Perform in-hospital lab testing and prepare specimens for outside labs
  • Perform and/or participate in all other diagnostics such as radiology, ultrasound, ECG, BP and glucose monitoring
  • Assist veterinarians in outpatient exams by taking histories, vital signs and weights as well as providing client education
  • Provide nursing care for in-hospital patients including all veterinarians requested treatments, diagnostics and medications
    • Accurately and completely record all treatments
  • Conduct pre-admission exams and discharge hospitalized patients
  • Perform client updates as necessary
  • Maintain legally defensible medical records in cooperation with veterinarians
  • Actively engages in Nursing Rounds
    • Rounds delivered/received at shift changes, anytime a staff member comes/leaves
    • Rounds will be complete, detailed and relative to patient & client care

  • Participates in a positive manner in all group sizes.
  • Refrains from participating in gossip.
  • Supports team members by assisting other areas, is receptive to feedback and suggestions.
  • Engages in active problem-solving vs. problem-identifying.
  • Makes suggestions related to client/patient service improvements and hospital efficiency.

 

Equipment:

  • Veterinary medical equipment including laboratory, imaging, anesthesia, surgery, IV pumps, monitors, etc.
  • Cornerstone/EzyVet computer system
  • Office equipment including photocopier, fax, telecommunications, etc

 

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Experience equivalent to job duties and responsibilities
  • Excellent veterinary nursing and technical skills
  • Excellent communication skills – written and verbal
  • Strong computer skills
  • Strong ability to multi-task, delegate and oversee daily work flow
  • Strong working knowledge of veterinary medicine – primary and emergency care

 

 

Physical:

  •  Able to properly restrain dog and cat patients for veterinary care and procedures
  • Able to stand, sit, bend, restrain, squat for extended periods of time
  • Able to teach, train, coach, and mentor in a positive, professional manner
  • Able to lift 40 lbs in a safe manner
  • Able to type, write and verbally converse
  • Able to work the posted schedule
  • Able to trouble-shoot and/or repair equipment or facility systems
