Veterinary Extern - General Practice

Heather Ridge Pet Hospital

Job Description

We are a four-doctor small animal practice with an amazing group of support staff. Our compassionate and knowledgeable team is dedicated to providing high-quality comprehensive care to our patients and their families. We have been serving the families of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and the surrounding area since 2005. The patients we see are primarily dogs and cats, and their families love that we have separate entrances and lobbies for them at our facility. Our full in-house laboratory includes CBC and full chemistry machines along with the Sedivue Urinalysis machine. We offer laser surgery, ultrasound, and digital radiographs along with digital dental imaging.

During the externship experience, you will work closely with your supervising Veterinarian to gain knowledge and skills in the areas of patient histories, physical examinations, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, surgical and dental procedures, medical management of patients, as well as customer service, client education, and communication.

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. Heather Ridge Pet Hospital offers externships to students in their final clinical year of veterinary school.

Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view list of stipend amounts and HERE for details on the stipend program.
