Veterinary Technician - Floater

Job Description

The vet assistant position will be responsible for providing our patients with medical care and compassion while connecting the client to our doctor and aiding in the examination, surgical, and hospitalized procedures. The position will ensure that all pets are handled with consistent quality care.

· Greet clients and patients with a welcoming and professional demeanor.

· Perform by way of a team player and desire for a clean, organized, and professional atmosphere that is compassionate and caring for our clients and patients.

Aid in examinations and treatments:

· Accurately and efficiently obtain medical history and record in medical record.

· TPR patients: Temperature, Heart rate and Respiration.

· Have knowledge of safely and humanely restraining animals.

· Ability to express anal glands, perform nail trims, and remove sutures/staples.

· Ability to draw blood samples, place catheter & IV lines, operate fluid pumps, administer subcutaneous fluids, administer medications, and prepare vaccinations.

· Obtain knowledge of heartworm preventions, flea/tick preventions, recommended blood work, and diets while possessing the ability to educate our clients on the importance of these recommendations.

Pharmaceutical knowledge:

· Knowledge of medications that are prescribed in our facility.

· Knowledge of the protocols for prescribing medications by way of current examinations and required lab profiles for the continuous use of medications prescribed to our patients

· Ability to enter medications into medical records exactly as noted by DVM, create labels according to DVM instructions, and accurately count the quantity of prescribed medication according to DVM instructions.

· Maintain an organized and sanitary pharmacy.

Laboratory & Diagnostics:

· Posses the ability to safely obtain samples (blood, urine, stool, cytology, etc.) to perform diagnostic testing.

· Knowledge of all types of diagnostics ran in-house and sent to the lab and ability to accurately perform and prepare them.

· Understanding of all lab equipment and its functions.

· Ability to perform digital radiographs and digital dental radiographs.

Surgery Assistance:

· Prepare the surgical suite and ensure it is safe, sanitary, organized, and prepared for surgical procedures. Ensure that all equipment, instruments, tools, and dressing are sterile and prepared for surgery.

· Knowledge of all surgical tools and equipment and ability to perform the use of such equipment.

· Assist DVM in surgery by way of ability and knowledge of all tools, instruments and equipment and ability to follow the instruction of the DVM.

· Ensure the safety of the patient at all times and accurately record levels, heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, etc. Ability to administer anesthesia in the most accurate and safest possible manner.

· Ensure that patients are prepared for surgery.

· Knowledge of animal care, cleanliness and organizational skills, problem-solving skills, and client service skills.

· A desire to further your education in the veterinary field in order to provide the best possible care for our patients.

· Ability to change and grow with new protocols.

 

 

Requirements:

· Veterinary experience preferred, but not required.

· Maintain a flexible schedule to include evening, holiday and weekend hours.

· A love and concern for the absolute well-being of animals.
