Veterinary Technician - Surgery

Job Description

In addition to the responsibilities outlined below, the Surgical Veterinary Technician is an invaluable member of the hospital team who works directly with the Veterinarian and supporting medical staff to ensure productive and quality veterinary care at all times.

Job Responsibilities

§  Ability to create and explain medical care plans to clients. As outlined, additional information can be asked by the Veterinarian in charge of the surgery or recommending the surgery

§  Email medical care plans, and confirming surgical procedures with clients. See attached protocol

§  Assists the Veterinarian during examination of animals, providing restraint as needed in order to work safely and effectively

§  Understands the surgical procedure performed or drop off for each patient and has read over the medical history of each patient for further

§  Check in patients to AviMark and write in client communication and weights for each patient

§  Provide restraint as needed in order to work safely and effectively

§  Properly communicate with team any client concerns, medical history, or observations noted during interactions with clients and patients

§  Understands what medications are used, where medications are stored, drugs, ranges, routes, uses proper handling and correct logging of all drugs used

§  Accurately calculate drug dosages to the appropriate effective dose

§  Prepares and administers medications, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed by the Veterinarian

§  Performs routine anesthetic dental cleanings on animals under the direction of the Veterinarian

§  Administers anesthesia to animals under the direction of the Veterinarian. Monitor patients’ vital signs every 5 minutes. 

§  Proper pain management of all patients. Understands what medications to use based on pre-existing conditions, when to dose, and how to give them.

§   

§  Obtains dental and full body radiographs of animals with knowledge of proper positioning and technique. Veterinary Technicians should also know how to trouble shoot machines and call appropriate manufacturer for further assistance.

§  Cares for and monitors the condition of animals recovering from anesthesia
