Chaparral Veterinary Medical Center is accepting applications for 2025-2026 internship opportunities!

 

Philosophy of Internship: The goal of our internship is to provide you with quality experience in a nurturing collaborative environment that balances in-hospital, ambulatory and academic veterinary medicine. The internship will provide you with an equivalent of approximately 5 years’ worth of private practice experience. You will acquire knowledge through diligent research on the cases that come through the hospital and out in the field. We will provide you with guidance and active training so you can leave Chaparral Veterinary Medical Center prepared for either a residency or private practice.


Additional Information: Chaparral Veterinary Medical Center has been serving veterinary medical needs for horses for over 30 years. Committed to our clients and their horses, we aim to provide the highest quality of equine veterinary care and excellent service to ensure the health and performance of every horse we serve. Chaparral Veterinary Medical Center is experienced in all types of medical and surgical conditions. Our facility includes: a separate isolation building, two surgery suites, ultrasound, endoscopy, standing surgery, radiology, MRI, nuclear imaging, acupuncture, and a free-standing farrier facility. You will be trained by boarded surgeons and internal medicine specialists. We offer first rate equine care.


Internship Established: 2003

Direct Supervision: 3-6 Months

Estimated Workload: 50-60 hrs./week

Emergency Duties (Nights / Week): 4

Internship Salary: $50,200 includes housing stipend

Internship Duties: Duties include workup and management of appointments and emergencies, primary care of hospitalized patients including treatments and writing orders, assisting in surgery, along with night duties for surgical, referred cases and primary emergency call (which is shared among intern-mates). We invite interns to participate in ambulatory calls as time allows and when interesting cases arise. Rotations include surgery, internal medicine, and a night/emergency rotation. Each intern will rotate on all services. The night rotation includes workup of emergencies with the specialist on call and overnight duties with hospitalized patients. Night technician support is also utilized for patient care. Each intern will also be exposed to hospital leadership, monthly journal club presentations, and community events. At Chaparral, our interns play an integral role in supporting the learning and development of the student externs that visit our clinic.
