Job Description

Job Summary: We are looking for a highly-motivated Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) to join our amazing team! Our ideal candidate is a compassionate healthcare professional who is passionate about providing medical care and support to patients in all stages of life. The CVT works closely with veterinarians to assist in diagnosing and treating various conditions, performing medical procedures, and ensuring the comfort and well-being of patients. This role requires a deep understanding of veterinary medicine, animal behavior, and strong clinical skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Patient Care and Monitoring:
    • Assist in the examination and assessment of animals.
    • Monitor vital signs of animals during surgical procedures and recovery.
    • Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian.
    • Provide nursing care and administer intravenous fluids, oxygen therapy, and wound care.
    • Observe patients for changes in condition and report to the veterinarian.
  2. Laboratory Procedures:
    • Collect blood, urine, and other specimens for diagnostic testing.
    • Perform laboratory tests, including blood smears, urinalysis, fecal exams, and cytology.
    • Prepare and process diagnostic samples for submission to external labs.
  3. Radiology and Imaging:
    • Perform diagnostic imaging procedures, including X-rays, ultrasound, and other imaging technologies.
    • Assist the veterinarian in interpreting images and providing relevant information for diagnosis.
  4. Surgical Assistance:
    • Prepare and maintain sterile surgical environments.
    • Assist veterinarians during surgeries by handling instruments, monitoring anesthesia, and ensuring patient safety.
    • Clean and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment.
  5. Anesthesia Monitoring:
    • Administer and monitor anesthesia before, during, and after surgical procedures.
    • Adjust anesthetic levels based on the patient's condition, as directed by the veterinarian.
    • Monitor respiratory and cardiac functions of patients under anesthesia.
  6. Client Communication and Education:
    • Communicate with pet owners regarding their pets’ health, treatment plans, and aftercare instructions.
    • Provide guidance on animal health care, nutrition, and preventive medicine.
    • Educate clients on topics such as vaccinations, parasite prevention, and dental health.
  7. Administrative Duties:
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records.
    • Assist in the management of clinic inventory, including ordering and stocking medical supplies.
    • Ensure proper sanitation and maintenance of clinic equipment and facilities.
  8. Emergency and Critical Care:
    • Assist in providing emergency and critical care to injured or ill animals.
    • Stabilize animals in critical conditions and prepare them for transfer to a veterinary specialist, if necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Graduation from an accredited veterinary technology program.
    • Certification as a Veterinary Technician (CVT, LVT, or RVT), with licensure required in the state of employment.
    • Continuing education to maintain licensure as required by the state.
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience working in a veterinary clinic, animal hospital, or related setting is preferred but not required for entry-level applicants.
    • Experience with animal care, medical terminology, and clinical procedures.
  • Skills and Abilities:
    • Strong knowledge of veterinary procedures, medical terminology, and animal care practices.
    • Proficient in using veterinary diagnostic equipment, laboratory instruments, and medical technology.
    • Excellent communication skills to interact effectively with pet owners and team members.
    • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
    • Ability to remain calm and focused during emergencies or stressful situations.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to lift and carry animals of varying sizes (up to 50 pounds or more) and assist with restraining them when needed.
    • Prolonged periods of standing, bending, and walking.
    • Comfortable working with potentially aggressive animals and in various environmental conditions.

Work Environment:

  • Full-time or part-time positions may be available.
  • Work is performed in a veterinary clinic or hospital environment, which may involve exposure to biological hazards, animal waste, and medical equipment.

Compensation:

 

  • Salary based on experience. ($18-$22 per hour)
  • Benefits may include health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and continuing education allowances.
