Animal Care Provider (Kennel Assistant) – Full-Time
📍 Galveston Veterinary Clinic – Galveston, TX

Do you love working hands-on with animals and don’t mind getting a little dirty in the process? Are you dependable, hardworking, and comfortable in a physically active role? Galveston Veterinary Clinic is seeking a Full-Time Animal Care Provider (Kennel Assistant) to support our medical team and ensure our patients receive excellent daily care and comfort.

This is a vital role within our hospital. Animal Care Providers are responsible for the cleanliness, safety, and well-being of our boarded and hospitalized pets. Weekend availability is imperative and required for this position.

🐾 Key Responsibilities

Animal Care & Patient Support

  • Provide daily care for hospitalized and boarded animals, including feeding, watering, walking, and monitoring.

  • Observe animal behavior and physical condition; promptly report signs of illness, injury, or distress to technicians or veterinarians.

  • Walk dogs multiple times daily to allow for exercise and elimination.

  • Bathe, groom, and provide TLC to animals as needed.

  • Ensure animals are clean, comfortable, and fresh-smelling prior to discharge.

  • Properly identify animals, cages, and personal belongings (toys, blankets, leashes, treats).

Medical & Technical Support

  • Assist technicians and veterinarians, under supervision, with:

    • Medication administration

    • Post-operative care

    • Sample preparation and specimen collection

    • Cleaning instruments and maintaining sanitary areas

  • Apply knowledge of animal nutrition and provide special diets or fluids as directed.

  • Exhibit working knowledge of veterinary products, diets, and medications; assist with client questions when appropriate.

Cleaning, Sanitation & Facility Maintenance

  • Clean, disinfect, and maintain kennels, cages, runs, wards, and stalls throughout the day.

  • Wash and sterilize food and water bowls.

  • Launder towels, bedding, and blankets.

  • Perform general hospital cleaning to reduce disease transmission.

  • Patrol hospital grounds, remove waste and trash, and maintain a clean exterior.

Teamwork & Communication

  • Work collaboratively with all hospital staff to support doctors, technicians, and management.

  • Follow written and verbal instructions accurately.

  • Maintain detailed records related to feeding schedules, behavior, and patient care.

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support hospital operations.

What We’re Looking For

  • Genuine compassion for animals and a strong work ethic.

  • Ability to handle and restrain animals safely and confidently.

  • Comfort working around sick, injured, or anxious pets.

  • Willingness to perform physically demanding and repetitive tasks.

  • Ability to work independently while also taking direction.

  • Prior kennel, animal care, or veterinary experience is a plus—but not required.

  • Must be reliable and punctual.

💪 Physical & Work Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift throughout the shift.

  • Lift up to:

    • 50 lbs independently

    • 100+ lbs with assistance

  • Comfort working in environments with noise, odors, animal waste, and potential exposure to bites, scratches, and contagious diseases.

  • Indoor work with occasional outdoor duties.

  • Compliance with OSHA, DEA, and all state and federal animal health regulations.

📅 Schedule

  • Full-Time

  • Weekend availability is required and non-negotiable

  • Hospital Hours:
    Mon–Fri: 8:00am – 6:00pm
    Sat: 8:00am – 1:00pm
    Sun: Closed

📍 Location: On-site at Galveston Veterinary Clinic
