Description & Requirements

Arizona Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center (AVECCC) is offering clinical externships for veterinary students interested in pursuing experience in emergency and critical care in small animal medicine. AVECCC is a segment of Arizona Veterinary Specialists, the largest specialty hospital in the Phoenix metro area with specialists representing 10 specialties (including 5 resident programs and 2 internship programs).

We are now offering exciting opportunities to work at all 3 of our ECC locations (AVECCC Gilbert, AVECCC Peoria and ARISE Veterinary Center in Queen Creek) as well as rotations with our internal medicine specialist at ARISE. Please be sure to clarify where you would like to rotate!

Externs have the opportunity to work alongside one of six diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care (DACVECC) as well as several experienced Emergency Clinicians while on emergency and/or ICU shifts. They will also be able to work one-on-one with current ECC interns and residents to learn about next steps following veterinary school. Externs have the opportunity to be involved with daily cage-side rounds, including holidays, with a DACVECC and/or ECC resident present. Additional time is given for the opportunity to participate in weekly didactics; including but not limited to journal club, weekly topic seminars, morbidity & mortality rounds, etc.

Student Externs will be encouraged to be involved in cases as well as perform and interpret diagnostics alongside their mentor veterinarian. If opportunity allows, students are encouraged to scrub in and assist with surgery and other procedures as deemed appropriate by the veterinarian. AVECCC offers extensive diagnostic and treatment capabilities including an in-house laboratory (CBC, biochemistry, blood gases, coagulation analyzer, sedivue), basic and advanced monitoring equipment (direct/indirect arterial BP, ETCO2, CVP, ECG, pulse oximetry), mechanical ventilator (both anesthetic and long-term ventilator), dialysis and plasma exchange, defibrillator, digital radiography, point of care ultrasound, acupuncture, as well as referral access to echocardiography, radiologist performed ultrasounds, CT, stereotactic radiation and endoscopy.

Consideration will be given to all interested externs currently in veterinary school. Students considering advanced training such as internship and/or residency are especially encouraged to visit and meet current interns and residents currently in training.

Our hospitals are located in Gilbert, Peoria and Queen Creek, all rapidly growing communities, with great restaurants and nightlife. Warm climate year-round, beautiful mountain and desert views, hiking and outdoor activities, access to lakes nearby and driving distance to attractions such as the California coastline, Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Sedona, among others, are just some of the advantages of our location.
