Oakridge-logo

Oakridge Equine Hospital offers a 1-year internship with a primary focus on surgery, sports medicine, imaging, and internal medicine. Interns will also see general practice and some theriogenology cases. There are six internship positions available to qualified applicants, with the goal of providing new graduates with a strong foundation for application into a residency program or entering private practice. To date, 80% of past interns that have applied for a residency program were successful in securing one.

Oakridge consists of five board-certified surgeons and one internal medicine specialist. Oakridge has a robust caseload of sports medicine, orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, medicine, and emergency medicine cases. Interns will have the opportunity to learn from a diverse skill set of senior clinicians with several years of combined experience. Each intern will be paired with a senior clinician on a rotating basis to maximize exposure to a variety of cases. Duties include assisting with outpatient diagnostics, lameness and sports medicine exams, surgical assistance, and assisting in the daily care of the assigned senior clinician’s in-house patients. If more than five interns are selected, rotations will also include anesthesia and potentially some field service cases. A technician performs most after-hours treatments. On average, each intern will enjoy 2 nights off per week and 2 weekends off per month.

We have a wide-range referral base encompassing all of Oklahoma, and extending into Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, and Texas. Caseload consists primarily of Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds, with disciplines ranging from racing and rodeo to pleasure riding. We offer clients a high-field MRI for diagnosis of complex soft tissue injuries to provide the best possible care for our patients. Other specialty therapies include stem cell, regenerative laser, platelet-rich plasma, IRAP, shockwave, AO/ASIF fracture fixation, and many other innovative surgical, medical and sports medicine therapies.

The internship year starts the day after Memorial day and goes through Memorial day the following year. This internship will facilitate critical thinking and refinement of your skills in a relaxed, yet professional environment. Upon completion of your internship year, you will have participated in a large and diverse surgical caseload, as well as all aspects of sports medicine, emergency medicine, and have a strong foundation for internal medicine.
